Fabricating a Hydrofoil on a KL Series CNC Router
Every so often an opportunity comes along that is just too intriguing to pass up.
Recently, Bob, got a call from Chris at VeFoil, a manufacturer of electric, jet powered hydrofoil-surfboards.
Chris asked Bob if the CNCs we manufacture and sell could assist them to fabricate a prototype of a hydrofoil for their new product. The chance to work on a project that required two-sided machining was a perfect opportunity to display the capability of the BobsCNC Routers.
Chris sent Bob the STL. file of a new hydrofoil design. Due of the wing’s complex geometry, Bob used SpaceClaim CAD software to split the model and create two separate STL. files, one for the top and the other for the bottom surface of the wing.
It was decided that #2 Yellow pine would be used for the prototype. Bob used Vetric’s V-Carve Pro to create and save the tool paths for each surface.
Jonathon, who runs our KL 755 Routers loaded the gcode files and verified the machine set up. Then using 5’ pieces of 2x10 stock created three perfect copies of the model.
When Chris and his team at VeFoil examined the wings they said simply, “They look amazing.”
